In 1980, Steve Caballero demonstrated his readiness for a pro signature model by finishing 3rd overall in the Gold Cup Series and winning the "Rookie of the Year" award. Initially, he was presented with a straightforward design featuring propeller and skull nose art, which he opted to decline. Instead, Steve took the initiative to create his own sketches, one of which depicted a crouching dragon, ultimately guiding the design direction.

Artist VCJ refined the dragon illustration several times before finalizing it for production. The skateboard deck made its debut in December 1980, and the response to the graphic was overwhelmingly positive, leading to its enduring presence until 1986.
